Ahmet Dündar (b. 1999, Eskişehir)
Working with sculpture, installations, video, and performance, I research topics surfaced by my childhood memories and use them as a ground to reestablish my own ethical values. I view art-making as a form of time travel, picking imagery from my past, like the scenes from horror movies I was exposed to, and examining it with laboratory care. Making becomes my way of looking inward, uncovering hidden pieces I've internalized and now overlook. By surfacing these pieces, I become critical of the power dynamics around me, questioning how things could've been and attempting to repair them in new, imaginative ways. Sometimes, this involves working like a child, and others, like a mad scientist.
I share my emotional backyard generously, and invite the viewer to help resolve a case, as I interrogate my alter egos. Currently, I put violence in the foreground of my investigation, fighting off the images that traumatized me; feeding books to my mushrooms, which will later become a baseball bat to smash a monitor. Working with installation, I highlight the presence of the invisible in a space by using kinetics, imagining spiritual beings interfering with our world: in the overgrown garden of an old hat shop, a bush was being swayed, as if they didn't want to be neglected.
